What you should know about waxing before and after

Body hair is the scourge of most of us. Why? Why, must it grow anywhere other than the top of our heads, in our eyebrows and lashes? Hair is not needed above my lip! and it is definitely not necessary growing under my arms and in my bikini area. So instead of shaving every other day I wax. In fact one of my most popular services is waxing.   I have been waxing clients for the last 10 years and I have seen it ALL! I do mean this literally of course. So in my experience  these are the things you need to know before an after a wax of any kind.

~take an asprin, ibuprofin or tylenol 30-45 minutes before your appointment if you are worried about the pain. You are having your hair ripped out of the follicle.... it can hurt.  Taking an over the counter pain reliever will help with any pain or inflammation. You do NOT need anything stronger than these.

~No makeup on any area that has recently been waxed. This will clog the pores and can irritate the skin. Wait at least 4 hours before makeup.

~exfoliate thoroughly but gently, 24 hours before a wax. This eliminates any dead skin cells that can clog the pores after a wax and it stimulates the hairs making removal easier. You can use a body scrub or loofah to get the job done.

~Toner is your friend. Toner will help soothe the skin and prevent ingrown hairs. A gentle, basic toner or witch hazel works great when applied in the days immediately following a wax.

~Know your cycle. Yes, for you ladies your period will play a significant role in your waxing experience. Aunt Flow is no reason to skip your waxing appointment, yes, even for a brazillian or bikini wax, just make sure you are clean. Being waxed during these times you may be more prone to redness and sensitivity when waxed right before or during your period or even while pregnant.

~Loose fitting clothes are a must after a body wax. In fact, I recommend for brazillians/bikini clients to go sans undies for at least 4 hours post wax. Undies are designed to fit snugly against the body which can increase the chances of ingrown hairs and irritation.

~ No sun exposure. Try to limit exposing any recently waxed skin to sun light. Waxing will remove a layer or two of the out layer of skin and you will be more susceptible to burns.
